Review: Dulasi Vathavoorar

City Tamil society made their mark this year by launching their first ever show – Latchiyam at the Logan Hall. With established shows from Queen Mary’s, UCL, Imperial and King’s; City had extremely high expectations to live up to.

The show was hosted once again by the comical duo Anujen Vijayarahaven and Pravinth Mahendrarajah. Even though these two are much well known for their witty lines and hilarious comedy sketches, I have to say, this time around, they were at their best! Their amusing, however repetitive, remarks about Tamil parents seemed to bring an outstanding sense of familiarity with which the audience could relate to and was more than enough to keep us entertained!

The music acts were also of exceptional quality. They were hosted by A.R.T.S; a newly established organisation directed by Mayuran Kathirkamanathan, Allen Jeyakumar and Raveenth Ehamparadasan. By adding a twist of western and eastern performances together, this proved to be Mayuran’s most demanding performance yet, but along with a remarkable accompaniment, especially from Joel Bradley. A on the guitar, Mathusoothanan Satchithananthan on the flute and Allen on a grand piano, the A.R.T.S performances were consistently impressive.

The dance acts were equally outstanding, especially ‘Circus Kuthu’, which was choreographed by Prito Itiacandy, Brinthan Varathalingam and Prakash Jeganathan. This had an added feature of clowning around amongst the audience, which made it more than just your average gaana act.

The Unity Youth group also gave a breath taking performance which left the audience on the edge of their seats with astonishment. We hope to see this group again, some serious talent there!

A special mention to the Committe dance ‘Blast from the past, performed by none other than the City Tamil Society committee themselves! Amongst all the stress of organising a show, it’s amazing how they managed to sort out such an engaging performance!

Vallee and the rest of her committee definitely did an incredible job with this show. Despite their chief guest Rhagavendra Lawrence backing out of the show at the last minute, City Tamil society made up for it by pulling off an enjoyable show. Well done to the committee! Let’s hope City Tamil society have now started a long lasting tradition!
